Ability Dogs
4 Young People

A few facts and figures:

  • The population of the Isle of Wight is just 150,000 of whom about 26,000 people are registered disabled or have long term illness.
  • There are over 700 children and young people (under the age of 24) with a disability living on the Isle of Wight.

Who we help

There are literally thousands of disabled people in the UK who could benefit from the help an assistance dog provides. There are simply not enough trained dogs to go round. We are starting small, and will be concentrating on helping people living on the Isle of Wight - there are over 26,000 people with limiting long-term illness or disability on the Island, many of whom are under 24 years.

We will be providing a service specially tailored to these young people's needs. Each dog will be carefully matched and trained to meet a specific need. Having fully trained our ability dog, we provide a high level of training and support for the young person in their home location and at their place of education or work. We, for example, go with them with their ability dog to their college or university and introduce the dog to their tutors, work out where it is going to settle during the lectures, etc.

We are being very open minded about who we can help - whatever the young person's disability if an ability dog can help them we will endeavour to train one for them. If you would like to know more, please use the contact us page.

Successor Ability Dogs

Once an ability dog is placed with a young person, with our support, the dog will help them until its retirement at 10 years of age. However old the young person is at that time, we will be happy to train another dog for them, a successor ability dog, if they can still benefit from an ability dog.
